Stephen A. Schantz, MD - Laser Bra Procedures Frequently Asked Questions

The laser bra procedure was developed to create a longer lasting and more permanent lift of the breast when performing a reduction, augmentation, mastopexy or standard breast lift.

Am I a candidate for the Laser Bra procedure?

  • Well-adjusted women, whose sagging breasts cause health and medical problems, interfere with routine activities, disrupt sleep, or suffer related self-consciousness.
  • Women who are concerned about nipple sensitivity and breast feeding after surgery.
  • Women who have been concerned about achieving a natural appearance of the breast, or the longevity of their post-operative results.

What can I expect during the surgery?

With the patient in the upright position, Dr. Schantz marks the new position of the nipple. Then, once the patient is under general anesthetic, incisions are horizontally and vertically made, adhering to the natural contours of the breast. The laser is then used to preserve the pedicle of the breast tissue that supports the nipple. The entire breast, along with the nipple, is lifted. Excess fat, tissue and skin are removed from each side of the breast. Once the breast is repositioned, the incisions are closed with dissolving sutures under the skin.

Why is it called the Laser Bra?

The Laser Bra method minimizes the possibility of "fallout" of the breast. The shape of the breast is maintained by creating the Laser Bra. This is achieved by using the laser to de-epithelialize the skin that would have otherwise been discarded, forming a bra out of the patient's own tissue. This bra is then attached to the chest wall where it holds and supports the breast. The Laser Bra cannot be seen or felt under the skin.

Why should I get the Laser Bra?

One of the greatest attributes of the Laser Bra is the greater longevity and lift for cosmetic breast surgeries (including Breast Lift, Breast Reduction and Breast Augmentation). What's more, the Laser Bra is fashioned from a patient's own tissue, unlike a previously hyped "mesh bra" which is actually made of plastic and foreign material. The Laser Bra cannot be felt by the patient. Numerous patients have reported problems with the mesh bra because it poked through the skin and is palpable.

Is the Laser Bra safe?

For those women who have been concerned about achieving a natural appearance of the breast or the longevity of their postoperative results, the Laser Bra affords a natural, safe and long lasting approach to breast surgery. The concept of the Laser Bra is a seemingly obvious one. What woman would not want an internal bra to lift her breasts naturally and safely?

With the Laser Bra the skin otherwise discarded is treated in such a way with the laser that a bra is fashioned and secured to the chest wall. This 'bra' holds the breast tissue up and in place. It is entirely internal and is done with the patient's own tissue; therefore, there are no added problems with infection or rejection, often seen with foreign bodies.

Are there risks involved?

This procedure does not increase the risk of surgery. If anything, there probably is less risk in terms of the anesthesia. 30-40 minutes are saved off a breast reduction utilizing this laser procedure, so the patient has less time under anesthesia.
