Fractional CO 2 technology is used for skin rejuvenation, reduction of fine lines and wrinkles, improvement in skin texture, redness, pigmentation and acne scarring. The newest laser technologies harnesses the proven power CO 2 lasers in a more gentle way, minimizing the recovery process and reducing social downtime.
What is fractional resurfacing?
Fractional resurfacing is a variation of traditional resurfacing of the skin where just a small percentage of the surface area is treated. The laser makes a large number of very small, highly controlled treatment points in a precise pattern on your skin. Because only a fraction of the skin’s surface area is actually treated, post-treatment healing is faster and you are able to resume normal activities sooner than with traditional CO 2 resurfacing.
Why fractional CO2?
CO2 lasers have been the gold-standard for resurfacing treatments for 20 years. This is because they are able to remove the outer layers of skin while heating the underlying tissues. This stimulates the production of new collagen which improves the tone and texture of your skin over time. By removing the upper layers of skin in a small percentage of the treatment area, recovery times are reduced while maintaining the benefits of skin resurfacing.
How does it work?
Fractional laser technology creates a large number of small holes called Micro Thermal Zones (MTZ) in the skin. The number and depth of the MTZ is very precisely defined. Because the MTZ are so close, the body’s natural healing process tends to repair the entire area, not just the holes. And because healthy untreated skin surrounds each of the MTZ, the recovery process is shortened.
What can I expect after treatment?
Typically you will find that your skin is red for up to 4 days, after which time you can wear make-up and return to work. Over the following day or so, your skin will look slightly bronzed as the treated pigment comes up to the surface and flakes off.
How many treatments will I need?
Often one treatment is enough, but this really depends on the level of sun-damage to your skin and your personal treatment goals. Dr. Waldman will be able to advise further.
Can I be treated?
Fractional laser treatment is suitable for most patients looking to improve fine lines, wrinkles, pigment spots and acne scarring. A few pre-existing medical conditions may make you unsuitable for treatment, but your Dr. Waldman will review this with you. Patients with darker skin types (type V and VI) may not be suitable for treatment. Sun exposure or the use of tanning beds should be avoided in the 2 weeks before treatment.
Do I need to take special precautions before and after treatment?
You may be given a post-treatment ointment to promote the healing process. Other than that, you only need to avoid sun exposure and tanning. Dr. Waldman may prescribe a short course of medication if you are susceptible to cold sores or to acne.
