Although the media often focuses on stories of women who want to increase their bust size, many women want to reduce the size of their breast because of embarrassment, discomfort, and postural problems. The standard breast reduction procedure involves reducing the amount of excess breast tissue and skin and repositioning the nipple and breast tissue to a higher, "perkier" position. Throughout the repositioning, the nipple remains attached to the underlying tissues so it can retain its natural blood supply and sensation. What can I expect during the surgery? Incisions are made around the pigmented area (the nipple-areaolar complex) and extended vertically below the nipple and in the fold under the breast (we often call this incision an anchor incision). The nipple-areolar complex is moved upward to the desired location and excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are removed.
How long is the recovery period? The incisions are covered with light dressings and the breasts are placed in a bra which holds the breast symmetrically during initial healing. Initial discomfort subsides daily and can be controlled with oral medication and incisions will usually fade in 6-12 months. Breast Reduction surgery can increase the risk of not being able to breast feed. Do large breasts cause any functional problems?Large pendulous breasts (mammary hypertrophy with ptosis) can cause many functional problems such as back, neck and shoulder pain, chronic skin changes and dermatitis of the shoulder and lower breast areas, pain in the breasts themselves and postural changes. Excessively large breasts also interfere with activities of daily living and limit the participation of many women in athletic activity.
